Today’s post is by fellow blogger, Dil who writes the blog SCforM: Skin Care for Men. Established last year it has exploded in popularity as the first fully independent, comprehensive male grooming blog. With tips, tricks, how-tos and reviews based on the science of skincare, it has quickly become a cult read amongst women too!  Here are some of his tips for men when it comes to self-tanning!

Facial Self Tan for Men

Self-tanner. It’s a slightly thorny issue when it comes to men because it’s often grouped together with cosmetics and other such feminine products. However, cast your eye over most grooming lines nowadays and you’ll see that there’s a huge demand for male self-tanning products. Why? Most men like to have a healthy tan to their skin and self tanners are the best and (more importantly) the safest way to achieve this. Now, more than ever, there are fantastic products out there that’ll give you a very natural looking tan with minimal effort.

The truth is that nowadays more men are benefiting from self tan than you’d think; it’s just that you only notice the bad ones. Done properly, a self-tanned complexion can instantly make your skin look naturally fresher and healthier. Besides, you can wear a sunscreen over your self-tanned skin – thus ensuring you have a perfect tan without any of that pesky sun burn and skin cancer you read so much about. Oh and it’ll help to avoid this:

Who said natural tans looks the best?

So, assuming that you’ve decided to take the plunge, what do you need to keep in mind when tanning a guy’s face?

First of all, a few facial tanning tips:

  • Follow the instructions on the packaging.
  • Use the product the night before you want a tan, never on the day.
  • Exfoliate and shave your skin before applying the tanner in order to get an even application. Facial scrubs are great for this.
  • Less is more. Start off by applying less than you think you should and then use more the next time if you want a darker colour.
  • Apply to completely bare skin. Skip your regular facial products at night in favor of your tanner. If you have to moisturize – wait for at least half an hour after applying the tanner.
  • If you’re tanning your face, remember to do your neck and ears too! If you expose your chest with your clothes, tan that too with the same product.

Uh oh, looks like Bradley Cooper could do with reading this. Make sure you get your entire face, neck and ears!

Oh, and men, remember your bald spot too! Unless you are very tall and never sit down, your bald spot will give away your self tanning secret.

    Hi,
I hate spending hours in the sun working on a tan, besides the damage it does. I have bought self-tanning lotions in the past and just wasn’t impressed much with that either, I don’t want to do the spray booth’s either. Does anyone know of a good quality self tanner they could recommend?
